Under the Magnolia Tree
A magnolia tree has followed me all through my life. I played underneath the one in my grandma’s front yard, we had one sprout out of the ground from a small sapling at my childhood home, and most every property Adrian has worked on, he has planted a Magnolia tree, even before he knew he would have a company in its namesake.
The magnolia tree existed even before bees. In fact, it is speculated that the magnolia tree grew to encourage bees and beetles to pollinate. I think that’s so incredibly beautiful and crazy! I mean bees didn’t even know HOW to pollinate before the magnolia tree. Even crazier is that the magnolia tree was created for a purpose that didn’t even exist yet!
I didn’t learn this fact until after my husband and I had already established Magnolia’s Landscape and Design. When I read it, I couldn’t help but be stopped in my tracks because it felt so divine, because of our own origin story.
I will be honest, before our daughter was born we scraped by, sometimes not able to make ends meet and we knew something had to give.
One breezy spring evening, as we sat out on our back deck, Adrian sipping Woodford and Coke while I enjoyed a glass of Cabernet, we started to dream. That dreaming turned into a manifestation of what we wanted this business to become, of what we NEEDED it to become.
Our dreams started off lofty and based on what we wanted in this crazy life. The first thing we knew we wanted was a little girl, although Adrian always said he “only made boys”, we manifested that first. And if we had that baby girl, she was to be named Magnolia. It seemed far fetched, but if that could happen so could our other dream, which was not quite so unrealistic. The next was a business plan to expand and grow Adrian’s current landscaping company, it would be a rebranding. I’ll spare you the details but it involved lots of lists and organizing, so, right up my alley. We had everything but a name for the company. Adrian asked me to choose. Right away I blurted out that it had to be Magnolia’s Landscape and Design, and with a bewildered look on his face, Adrian immediately agreed.
We finished off our drinks and the evening dreaming of what might come, not expecting anything other than waking up the next morning continuing our hustle to feed our two wild little boys.
Two short months later we found out we were expecting! And another short month after that, we found out we were having our Magnolia! The company was taking flight quite successfully, too. It was amazing how everything fell into place. Just like with the Magnolia tree at its origin. The tree was born to make flowers blossom, trees spread, and to help grow life, itself. All before there was even a bee or a beetle to pollinate the tree and help it do the very job it was created for!
We created a business in the name of a little girl we were yet to have, on the back deck of our small two bedroom home, without two nickels to rub together. But we believed, we felt crazy for it, but we believed. And almost three years later, here we are! Magnolia’s Landscape and Design is spreading its green thumb from yard to yard, slowly but surely pollinating (if you will) and leaving its mark on Lexington, Kentucky.
So, yes, our company is named after our daughter, but it’s not as simple as it may seem. Our company is named after the dreams we spoke into existence one spring night sitting under the stars. And all of those dreams have come true. I think it’s about time for another one of those nights.
